Hi guys,

I’d like to share an article I’ve just found. You know that to me, the best brand in big and tall menswear is Jonathon Charles Big and Tall menswear ( www.jonathoncharles.co.uk/ ). They have a wide range of clothing and footwear and I’ve never been disappointed. They started their adventure in 1987 and have since grown to get 7 shops across the midlands.

Surviving in any industry is really hard as many challenges appear and competitors are ferocious. The magazine MRketplace has actually decided to analyze the Big and Tall industry through the eye of successful brands in an article published in March/April 2014. I find it really interesting as they show that only experts and clever brands can prosper.

To me, this is another proof that we can trust brands like Jonathon Charles as they are independent and they do their best for both of us.

John Amaechi - Success Talk & Being Tall

I can really identify with this talk by John Amaechi, as I'm sure many of you will too. He speaks about his childhood growing up being so tall and different from other kids in his hometown.

He is now a psychologist, executive coach and also an introvert. He has a lot of other amazing things in his bio, but I don't want to spoil it for you if you don't know of him. If you are tall and introspective it's well worth the 20 minutes of time. I imagine we'll see John on a TED Talk sometime soon if he hasn't already done one that I have not yet found.

Delta Airs Absurdly Poor Customer Service

Good Morning this is Delta Airlines Customer Service,

How about we start off your morning revoking your voucher that you paid for, then insinuating that you are trying to cheat the system and
calling you stupid for thinking we would have a process that every other
Delta employee has told you about and appears on my computer screen.

Lets toss in some questioning about your feminine name and deep voice which shows me you are trying to lie again, this time about your gender
and who you are. Ok now back to my coffee, job well done and $400
nicely stolen from a loyal customer.

Me: Huh?!! I can assure you that I am a male sir, I am not dumb, that I did pay for that voucher and despite your "years" of service that at
least has been the process.

What does shock and dismay me is that Delta's customer service has crumbled this far and that you have had
your job for "years" telling customers they are liars right down to
questioning their ethics and gender. Forget the face I was trying to purchase a $1400 plane ticket and you probably just flushed the extra grand down the drain.

Thats ok, I will nicely hang up with you and take my case to Delta and social media. I love that we are no longer bound by 1-on-1
conversations with big faceless corporations.

If only I had musical talent I'd write a follow-up song called "United breaks guitars and
Delta questions the gender you are".

Its bad enough us tall people have to wince in the pain and discomfort of coach to get anywhere, but at least I've always been nice about understanding that it is a business and I do fall outside the norms of human size which isn't there fault, and it is my choice to fly or not. I however do not have to put up with that level of service.

Tall Summer Dresses

One of the best things about summer is getting to wear super-cute summer dresses!

Being a tall girl, dresses seemed to be the one thing I could wear in a regular size, but over the years, dresses have continually gotten shorter. At this point, there is no way I could wear a regular size dress - they barely cover my toosh!

While few retailers carry tall dresses, I’ve had great luck at Old Navy this season. I just purchased two tall dresses (pictured above) earlier this week and love them! One is perfect for the pool/beach and the other is great for date night!

The best part? They were both less than $30 / dress!

Large Size Flip-Flops

Every summer I have the same challenge....trying to find cute, trendy flip-flops that actually fit. I have too many pairs of flip-flops where my feet hang off the back - not good!

While on vacation in Florida, I discovered my now FAVORITE flip-flops, Havaianas!! Most cute flip-flops only go to size 10, but Havaianas go up to size 12!! Hallelujah! Long are the days where I have to wear flip-flops where my feet hang off the back!

Not only are Havaianas super cute and trendy, they are are the most comfortable flip-flops I have ever worn, by far! Unlike other flips-flops, they are very squishy and never rub my skin or give me blisters.

Havaianas are about $24/pair, but they are extremely durable and will last multiple seasons! They can be purchased at several retailers (i.e. GAP, Dillard's, etc), but I have only found the larger sizes on the Havaianas website.

Hey there

This is Jheri and I am helping out a bit on the Colleenified Countertops for tall people. We're not making any money on this, it just seemed like a good idea because cooking can be a pain if you are tall.

There are some other ideas for products for talls and particularly tall women, but the maker needs to be convinced this is a viable product before she goes ahead - it is a small woman-run business in Kentucky that is tall friendly, but they can't afford to make mistakes. Your help will make it more likely that something will come of this.

I have some questions to feed back to Colleen who is really trying to promote this more than me. If you have time we would greatly appreciate your answers. It will take about 5 minutes to read Colleen's blog pages and watch her video if you haven't and a couple of minutes to fill out the survey.

Cheyenne asked about this as I worry about it.

Some of you are athletes and maybe you can add.

The first thing to note is that I am NOT a doctor and you might want to talk to one who understands this sort of thing. Your normal physician might be a fine person, but you need to talk to someone who specializes in sports medicine. Get assessed by them and they might prescribe a few sessions with physical therapists who specialize in sports physical therapy. This makes a huge difference.

I also don't want to come over as a fanatic. I do a lot of exercise I guess, but it is part of my life. Running is where I unwind and think. I don't own a car, so I use a bike to get around and that is combining transportation and exercise - a really good thing. Of course it is very easy to use a bike here. I do visit a gym maybe twice a week for thirty minutes to an hour to use their machines, but I mostly hate that. I also hate cardio exercises led by people. I do have a set of back exercises that are pretty easy, but boring that I talk about that get done maybe three times a week.

A lot of tall people develop neck and back problems and there can be permanent damage - just going out and doing something might worsen your condition.

It was stressed to me that I need to do exercises that strengthen my back. Yoga was strongly recommended, but I don't have the proper mindset for that. If you can do it, it is great and you are unlikely to damage yourself. I was given this link from the Mayo clinic showing some safe back exercises. I'm not very good about following them, but go through most of them about three times a week. I feel good afterwards.

Stretching, warming up and cooling down are all important when you are worried about the back and this is an area where you should probably get advice from a sports medicine guy. What I do as a taller than average person is a bit different than what an average person should do.

Walking, running and biking are all great exercises. Walking and biking are particularly safe. If you haven't run in awhile you might get a bit of coaching and pay real attention to your feet as it is easy to get injured. Keep good in good cardiovascular shape is important and an expert can tailor the right sort of exercises as we all have different muscle types. I am a distance type, so I run about an hour a day at least five days a week. Plus I don't have a car and bike everywhere - and I am not a slow rider. On my last few visits I was told I am very similar to an athlete, even though I am certainly not one.

I'm not a swimmer, but you might want to check on that if you are.

i was told weights are not a good exercise as we have longer lever arms and the forces can get too high for the bone and muscle cross sections. You can do them if you are careful and have someone show you, how, but usually they aren't good. By weights I am talking about heavy weights. They said light weights are fine.

Rowing and the elliptical were recommended as good all purpose gym exercises. The problem is some of the machines are not big enough to handle tall people and that can cause problems. A gym I use has three beautiful rowing machines and when I push back I run to the end of the track to a jarring stop. The company has a tall model. but my gym doesn't have it.

Keeping a good posture as much as you can is very important. I was told to walk as if I was short and trying to appear as tall as possible.

Learn how to lift things properly as you have this long back that can be damaged. They even stressed things you do a lot in the house - cooking, ironing and other housework should be done at the appropriate height or you are in risk of damaging your back. This also holds for work. I was told if I can't find an appropriate desk and chair that I should think about tracking down an expert and having one made.

At the risk of too much promotion I think things like the raised cutting board makes a lot of sense. Shipping one here was too expensive, so I had one made and it is *great*!!! Notice the amazing difference in her posture. if you live in the US, it is probably cheaper to get one from the place Colleen recommends. She loves hers as does a friend of hers who is only 6'1. Be innovative and figure out activities that may be causing problems and find fixes for them!!!

Keeping weight off is particularly important for tall people. It is that lever arm thing again. A moderately overweight tall person is much more at risk for back problems than someone who is of average height, but is similarly overweight. This turns out not to be a problem for me as I'm very thin, but if you have a problem with weight try to take it down for the sake of your back.

Oh - and this is important for women - be *very* careful about wearing heeled shoes. Many of them are pretty or even downright sexy, but they can throw your posture and hurt your back in addition to your feet and legs. If you must wear the uncomfortable sexy ones, make sure you don't actually walk or stand in them very much. My sports physician said he has seen a lot of 40 year old women who seriously damaged their backs and feet with improper heels when they were younger. It is much worse on tall women because we have longer backs. If you feel any back pain when you wear heels you should not be wearing them. All is not lost though. I like having a bit of extra height at times and find my Danskos to be more comfortable and giving me better posture than my flats. My running sneakers and bare feet are better than anything though.

I dance for fun and imagine that can be good, but I have never asked about it specifically. For those of you who are shy and have problems meeting people - I recommend this for other reasons:-) Most women love to dance and guys just don't figure that out.

So posture, posture posture; strengthen the back and make it more flexible and improve your cardio performance with regular walking, running and bike riding. Plus we have to be extra careful about how we life things.

(I can say a lot on finding bikes that fit too:-)

Tall Office Chair - The Search - UPDATE with Solution

Search for the best tall office chair

So I stop looking like this guy everyday

So I'm looking around at buying a good office chair for my home office, but find that most "tall" designations are for people 6'1 and taller. Nothing against 6'1 people, but I'm a bit taller than that at 6'11".

That extra 10 inches of height and 300+ pounds of support needed means that this will probably be yet another long exhaustive search for the perfect tall persons office chair.

As I look around and find potential options I'll paste the links and information in this post. I figure it's something I would do anyway, trying to keep track of my options, so why not share that experience with everyone else.

By doing this, then down the road, we will all have a useful resource for fellow tall people trying to save their cramped back by finding a proper fitting tall office chair.

Ergonomics

Tall Chair Seat Height

The height of your seat should be high enough that your thighs are at least parallel to the floor, or preferably have your hips slightly higher than your hips.

For me that means I'm looking for a chair that will rise up to 23 or 24 inches high

Annoyance is that many people list the overall height of the chair and not just the seat. My legs, could care less how high the back of the chair goes up.

Tall Chair Seat Depth

The depth of the seat is something to consider as well. The deeper the seat depth the more of your body weight can be supported by the chair (this is something to consider when purchasing couches as well.)

My initial guess is that I probably am looking for 20inches deep of a seat.

Tall Chair Seat Width

Obviously if you can not fit into the seat width-wise this is a problem. This is really the airplane dilemma where people think fat people should pay for two tickets if they want to be comfortable. Truth of the matter is that the bones of my hips do not fit into many airplane seats. I find it so comfortable bruising the points of my hips or sitting awkwardly with hips vertical in one direction or another for a flight to get somewhere. No need to repeat that in looking for my perfect tall office chair.

I'm not sure what width I need at this point, but looking for a chair with adjustable arms or no arms at all may make for a good choice.

UPDATE - Solution Found! - November 3, 2015

So.. it's been a long time coming for me to find a viable and affordable tall person office chair solution. I'm sure some of the $1000+ chairs are great, but for $60 extra this method has worked out amazingly great for the ROI.

As it turns out you can buy taller cylinders and actually replace the cylinder in an old office chair or even buy one from a chain store that you find comfortable and just replace the cylinder.

I wound up buying this 8" cylinder and at 6'11 this chair goes way higher than I need, in fact at it's lowest its probably perfect for me. The 5" cylinder might be better for anyone shorter, and perhaps even fine for myself.

There is probably a safety risk for chairs going up this high especially for normal people which is probably why we don't see them often, but I feel completely safe in my chair, though the 5" may be more stable.

Here are the two different height products for you to check out on Amazon. Note those are affiliate links but certainly feel free to search around for more. I had great luck with this vendor and the part was delivered quickly and worked perfectly once I got the old cylinder out of my short office chair.

Finally, for replacing the cylinder, there are tons of videos, but this one was a good start. My chair was really stuck and took some serious WD-40, time and the pipewrench technique, but it was pretty old and jammed in there after years of use. A new chair would probably be even easier.

a raised height cutting board for tall cooks

I have a lot of lower back pain when I'm bending over the low counter in the kitchen for more than about ten minutes at a time. My friend Colleen has a longer way to bend.

She and a friend came up with a raised height counter top. It is much cheaper than having custom cabinets and counters put in. They found a manufacturer and a product will be announced in soon on her blog. Feel free to share it with tall or even just tallish cooks.

The length and width can be custom and the height is set by a measurement to your elbow.

If you're in an apartment like me or your budget is tight, this may be the best way to get some back relief. I'm going to get one of these.

a fantastic way to deal with stares and those questions and comments

Face it, it you are tall you get a lot of stares and questions and comments. I think tall women get it even more because it is more ok to be tall if you are a guy.

I deal with this by being positive. When someone asks a dumb question or makes one of those comments we all hear, I smile and give them a complement. It completely changes what goes on and can leave both of us happy. I've had some very nice conversations that have started this way and have been able to have met some great people I would have never met on my own.

Colleen was interested in making more people happy and decided to give strangers high fives. Here is her blog post and a video.

Look at some of the people! This is really wonderful and I will try it myself soon. It takes getting your nerve up a bit and may be easier if you convince a friend to do it with you, but it is going to make some people smile and that is a good thing.

We talls have a natural advantage here. It is probably much harder to do if you were of average height. This is a way to take advantage of our stature and make a lot of people smile.

In my head I've titled this blog like a pick up line. I feel like I've broken up with 2009!! All in all I had a really good year. I started my job with the Catering Company. I started Tall In Indy, (which do to the job has pretty much taken the back burner). It's amazing how much free time you have when you're unemployed and how much time you don't when you work non-stop!!! Since my last blog I've since been promoted!! So... doin' good there!!

I got married this year. Which was a big step in the Grown-up direction for me. I'm still hanging on to the last bits of the single life. It's kind of hard to let go sometimes. I still want to go out with my friends. I still want to go to all the music festivals in the mid-west. I want to party like it's 1999!! LOL My husband is pretty groovy though. He feels the same.

We're not ready to have kids yet. Soooo we rescued a dog. She's part Border Collie, part Lab, her fancy mutt name is "Borador" or "Laberdollie". But to us, she's just Boomer. If you know me and my husband then you also know that we're really big into the SciFi!!! Boomer is a character from BSG. I'll post pictures of her soon. She's been great. We did want to get a puppy, but there are so many animals out there that need homes we decided to rescue instead. It's been pretty easy. She's already house broken, she's still very much a puppy in a sense. She has a ton of energy!! I can't wait for it warm up so that she can get me back in shape!! (Being very happy, and comfortable and married I've gotten fat!)

I'm looking forward to 2010. I'm really looking forward to taking that vacation/honeymoon we've yet to take. Still don't know where yet. I'm really looking forward to doing all the things I really wanted to do last summer but couldn't due to paying for the wedding ourselves and moving into a new house. Both of us worked like crazy last summer too. The company I work for does a lot of the Catering for the Suites at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and come Race Time there is no such thing as a "weekend off".

I don't really have a lot of New Years resolutions. I find that no one really sticks with them anyway. I know I don't. I just know what needs to be done and there for I'll do it!!

Every day my Facebook updates are full of new converts with friends statuses proclaiming their love for for one, or both, of the hot, young men after seeing New Moon. I’m lost - what is it about the films and these two that have women from 14-40 yrs old behaving as if they’ve got a teenage crush? I’ve got no idea.

I am told it’s because ‘Edward’ embodies some of the ultimate desirable traits in a man such as romanticism, strength, gentleness but with a dangerous edge. Er.. ok. Maybe I’m just still in my bad boy phase but I like a man to be buff, dark and sporty - not all pale, dead and lean.

Well, maybe Robert Pattinson is just a little bit more interesting to me following the recent revelation that he only used to date tall girls. The British heart-throb is 6ft 1stated in a recent article that he used to only be attracted to women the same height as him.

“I used to go for these tall Amazonian girls but now I like anything! …”

Robert is rumoured to be dating his Twilight co-star Kristen Stewart and has said that, obviously now more mature at 23, he is more interested in intelligence than good looks.

“I like smart people like Tina Fey, she is the sexiest woman. I always thought I would get more girls after I got involved in movies. And it never, ever happened! I thought, ‘I’m going to be a big movie star and I want to go out with some models!’ ”

Uh huh… “want to go out with some models” ? Seems like young Pattinson is dipping his toe into the average-height girls pool but is holding out for one of us lovely, tall women to sweep him off his feet. So, sorry to my friend Michaela who’s only around 5ft2, but I think this will make my friend Liz (6ft), a massive Twilight fan who got to meet the lovely ‘Edward’ the other day, feel like Christmas has come early!

Who is Dakota Simms?

Dakota is a 10-year old rising basketball phenom

(Story from 2009/2010. In 2013, Dakota continues practicing hard and reaching for his dreams with brothers Maximus and Scorsese at the Ravinia Club in Atlanta, GA.)

Dakota practices everyday shooting over 300 shots. He routinely makes 50 3-pointers within 5 minutes. That is a shot "made" every 6 seconds; with just one ball! He is student of the game, a student in school and a quick study of both.

Watching CNN.com's 3-minute feature of NBA Hall of Famer, Dominique Wilkins and Dakota playing and talking about the game they love and what it takes to rise to the top. You will fall in love with the desire, passion and heart shown by young Dakota Simms.

Dakota started playing at age 7 and has never looked back. While kids his age are playing with a smaller ball, Dakota refuses to take the shortcuts and only plays with a pro-sized ball. "It takes strength to shoot the ball, it's not like something you can just throw up there and hope it goes in", plainly states Dakota.

Dominique and Dakota had a chance to meet and play and the Atlanta Hawks practice facility a few weeks ago. Dominique was fully impressed by Dakota Simms' arsenal of skills but had some poignant advice for him that carries on and off the court. "As long as you keep that attitude and focus, only you can stop you. Always remember that." The NBA legend continued with further advice for all kids of all ages, "Its the things you do now that dictate who you become in the future."

Surrounded by friends, family and coaches everyday Dakota puts his work in and loves the game. One of his special moves is called "the matrix". That was not a video effect you saw at the beginning of the CNN reel, that was Dakota slowing his between the leg dribble down into super slow motion before kicking it back up a notch. A notch that continually feeds his fire.

Is Dakota Simms NBA bound?

Only time can really tell, but Dakota sees the future blindingly bright and still just as simple as one basket at a time.

"Basketball is like a game of focus where if you miss a shot, you have to get your head right, you have to fix it, no one else is going to do it for you. I love basketball."
